PURLINE organic flooring from wineo – the environmental base at the Valentinshof fertility clinic
“When the focus of a person or couple is on the wish to have a child...” – this is how the Valentinshof in Hamburg, a clinic specialising in reproductive and antenatal medicine, introduces its medical services for women and couples. It is logical that the concept of welfare should also have been important to the private practice when it came to choosing the furnishings for its consulting rooms and laboratories. Only non-toxic and solvent-free materials and PURLINE emission-free bio-polyurethane flooring was used.
When it comes to the wish to have a child and all the medical services connected with this, Dr. Anja Dawson, a specialist in gynaecology, obstetrics and endocrinology at the Valentinshof clinic, makes her feelings clear: “Within the framework of what is ethical, we feel that we only have a duty to fulfil the parents’ wishes and desires and the classic values of medicine. That’s why we are independent and do not belong to any healthcare or laboratory group. A team of interdisciplinary specialists works together at our clinic, maintaining a confidential relationship with the patient, to offer the entire spectrum of fertility care - from optimising the woman’s natural cycle to In Vitro Fertilisation.“
wineo – PURLINE: “Outstanding” organic flooring
Renovation work involved converting the rooms previously used as offices into a 660 m2 practice with operating theatres and treatment rooms, private rooms and a state-of-the-art laboratory. “We work with the latest technical equipment in our own IVF laboratory. Throughout the entire practice, but particularly in our IVF laboratory, we have made sure we use low emission and solvent-free materials,” explain the clinic’s operators. The desire to turn this concept of keeping pollutants to a minimum into a reality led to the decision to install the healthy wineo PURLINE organic flooring.
Eight national and international certificates and labels from independent test institutes on the emissions and quality of the flooring and numerous design/innovation and architecture awards are proof of the unique quality of the innovative flooring produced in the Eastern Westphalia region of Germany. As the only supplier of bio-polyurethane flooring, Windmöller does not use any chlorine compounds in the production of its organic flooring. It also contains no plasticisers (phtalate) or solvents (VOCs).
The lack of emissions is a considerable advantage and not just for the Valentinshof clinic, which is visited by people with increased sensitivity (e.g. pregnant women, children). The staff also appreciate an employer who assumes responsibility for ensuring an emission-free workplace.
The planners and doctors favoured the use of PURLINE because, as well as its emission-free properties, it also fulfils all the requirements of everyday life at the clinic. It is extremely hard-wearing (NK 43), antistatic, chemical resistant, particularly hygienic, helps achieve pleasant room acoustics and is also sustainable and cost-effective to maintain.
The 2.5 mm thick product flooring was fitted in all the practice rooms. The reception area, waiting room and corridors were fitted with the homely and particularly genuine-looking “Calistoga Nature” wood-look flooring (PURLINE planks in 1500 x 250 mm format). In the laboratory and in the treatment and rest rooms, the “Melange” design with a fine pearl structure from the LEVANTE collection was used.
The organic flooring made of castor oil (with chalk as a filler) has a resilience of almost 100 percent, which means that point loading – from heavy furniture, for example – does not leave behind any lasting traces of indentation. According to a life-cycle cost analysis, PURLINE allows verifiable savings up of to 30 percent in maintenance (cleaning and care) costs thanks to the reduced consumption of water, cleaning products and less time spent on maintenance.
Certification & awards
wineo PURLINE is manufactured in Germany and has won several important international design prizes, including the Interior Innovation Award 2014, the “Best of Best” Iconic Award 2014 and a “Special Mention” at the German Design Award 2015. The organic flooring has been approved for construction by the DIBT (“Ü” rating) and has many internationally recognised certifications, e.g. Blauer Engel (Blue Angel), EPD, the German TFI-TÜV PROFiCERT, the GreenGuard Gold Label, the Finnish M1 label for building material, the Danish Indoor Climate Label and the French A+ certificate.
A selection criterion that can be fulfilled by medical specialists in human reproduction should also be continued by parents and child carers - emission-free flooring with a neutral effect on interior air. Harmful environmental factors affect our offspring all too soon; that’s why the medical, home and school environment should be kept as free as possible from them. PURLINE organic flooring helps to achieve this. It is not only ideal for use in medical practices and healthcare, it should also be used as flooring in children’s bedrooms, nurseries, classrooms, lecture halls and places of work.
