Project description

Flooded with light, spacious and state-of-the-art – this is Ward 07 at the UKM (University Hospital Münster). The exclusive interior design is characterised by clean, expressive lines, a natural, calm choice of colours and materials, contrasting surfaces, atmospheric lighting and high-quality materials. The ward was built as an extension to the existing six-storey building of the Central Hospital and, with an investment of around 7.2 million euros, marks the first milestone in an extensive modernisation and capacity expansion programme on the Albert Schweitzer Campus in Münster.

Expanding ward capacity for patient care is a key priority at the UKM. The aim is to address, on the one hand, high occupancy rates and rising patient numbers, and on the other, the demands of modern, interdisciplinary diagnostics and patient care, whilst also creating a pleasant working environment for staff and a comfortable atmosphere for patients.

The 64-bed comfort ward, comprising single and double rooms, is used by the Department of Cardiology and Angiology, as well as by the clinics for Cardiac and Vascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology and Gynaecology.

When fitting out the premises for patients and staff, and designing the communal and circulation areas, interior designer Manfred Felix Haverkamp of H-ID Haverkamp Interior Design opted for a minimalist interior with clean lines, rooms flooded with natural light, green atriums and a natural, calming colour and material palette comprising light oak, white, grey and greige.

PURLINE in the desired design

Almost 3,300 square metres of the permanently elastic wineo PURLINE flooring was laid in the circulation areas, treatment and lounge rooms, and the patient rooms on the comfort ward. The sustainable polyurethane flooring, manufactured predominantly from renewable raw materials (rapeseed or castor oil) and natural fillers (chalk), was specially produced for the UKM according to the interior designer’s individual specifications. The interior concept called for a floor covering that evoked a Mediterranean feel. To meet the interior designer’s specifications, various colour designs were developed and test areas with different colour depths were created until the desired result was achieved. The impressive outcome of this process is the special ‘Solino’ design, a finish whose colour and texture are reminiscent of sand and stone, without imitating natural materials.

Sustainable, free from harmful vapours, cost-effective

PURLINE by wineo makes a significant contribution to clean indoor air and pleasant room acoustics in the comfort ward. This sustainable commercial flooring contains no added chlorine, solvents or plasticisers, making it low-emission and odourless. With a product thickness of just 2.5 mm, it is also easy to install in refurbishment projects, extremely hard-wearing (NK 43) and easy to maintain, ensuring it is durable and cost-effective to maintain. According to a life-cycle cost analysis (based on a study by the Pfiff Institute), PURLINE has been shown to deliver savings of up to 30 per cent – extrapolated over a 20-year lifespan – compared with conventional resilient flooring.

Highly durable, robust, wear-resistant and safe

It is highly wear-resistant and resilient to physical stresses and the effects of chemical substances and corrosive liquids. It therefore meets the high standards required in hospital environments in terms of hygiene and the ability to be thoroughly disinfected. Thanks to its thermosetting properties, the polyurethane flooring retains its colour and shape even when exposed to heat (e.g. sunlight). Its inherent resilience means that no permanent indentations can form on its surface, such as those caused by point loads from heavy objects like beds or cupboards. The floor reduces impact noise and, with an R 9 rating, is highly slip-resistant. In the event of a fire, it stands out due to its low smoke emission – escape routes remain visible and no toxic gases are produced.

Certified and Award-Winning

PURLINE is a ‘made in Germany’ product, developed and manufactured in Detmold, East Westphalia, by Windmöller Polymer Technologie GmbH. It holds numerous internationally recognised quality and emissions-related certifications, such as Cradle to Cradle Silver, the Blue Angel environmental label, GreenGuard Gold and EPD, and has already won seven internationally significant architecture and design awards.
