Visual illusion

The herringbone pattern has the unique ability to make rooms appear larger, as the diagonal arrangement draws the eye to the length of the pattern. This gives a feeling of grandeur. This special feature makes the herringbone pattern ideal for compact and smaller areas that you want to make seem larger.

Timeless appeal

Unlike other design trends, the herringbone pattern has stood the test of time. Its history can be traced back to ancient civilisations and yet herringbone is as relevant today as it was centuries ago. Its timelessness makes it an elegant pattern that will last for years.

Versatile installation methods

The different types of installation also ensure maximum versatility. While the classic 1-panel installation creates calm and balance, the 2-panel installation is elegant and sophisticated. The triple installation offers a different dynamic, adding movement to the room. Yet more unusual designs and patterns can be created with our flooring ... the possibilities are endless!

Powerful and sustainable

With PURLINE herringbone, this trend can be integrated in a versatile way in a wide variety of rooms. The innovative polyurethane floor covering combines high-performance, sustainability and design diversity. Manufactured using
mainly renewable raw materials and natural fillers, PURLINE organic flooring is not only extremely hard-wearing and durable, but also does not release any harmful substances into the indoor environment. Already in 2018 PURLINE was certified Cradle to Cradle® Silver, which attests to its high environmental compatibility.

Frequently asked questions about herringbone installation

  • How is herringbone installed?

Installing a herringbone pattern creates a timeless and elegant look in flooring that is often associated with traditional craftsmanship. Here is a basic guide on how to install herringbone flooring:

     Step 1: Prepare the subfloor

Make sure the subfloor is level, dry and free from dirt and imperfections. This may include removing old flooring, levelling out any uneven areas and laying a damp proof course if necessary.

    Step 2: Material selection

Select the material you want for your herringbone flooring. Typically, our PURLINE organic flooring and design flooring for gluing are compatible options for laying a herringbone pattern. Inspect the material to ensure it is sound and is not damaged.

    Step 3: Pattern planning

Decide which direction you want the herringbone pattern to face. Traditionally it runs diagonally to the wall, but you can choose other angles. Sketch your pattern on the flooring to make sure the lines are straight and the pattern is symmetrical.

    Step 4: Laying the pattern

Start in the centre of the room and work your way out. For all the important instructions on how to do this, please refer to our installation guide or watch our herringbone installation video tutorial.

Installing herringbone flooring requires precise planning and care, but the results are impressive. If you're unsure about your project, it is advisable to call in a professional floor layer to ensure that everything is laid professionally.

  • Can herringbone be laid on all subfloors?

Herringbone patterns are an aesthetically pleasing way to create flooring, but they are not easy to install on all substrates. Here are some important considerations:

Is your subfloor level?: The subfloor on which the herringbone pattern is to be laid must be level and free from imperfections. Even small irregularities can disrupt the pattern and cause problems. If necessary, you should level the subfloor before laying. Click here to find our top tips when preparing a subfloor.

Subfloor inspection: Before you start the installation, it is advisable to check the subfloor to ensure that it meets the requirements of your chosen flooring. A professional surveyor can help you with this.

Moisture: Some materials are sensitive to moisture. Make sure the subfloor is dry and, if necessary, use a suitable moisture barrier to prevent moisture ingress.

Material selection: Our PURLINE organic flooring and design flooring in the glue-down version are ideal for achieving creative herringbone designs. However, the suitability of the material depends on the application area, planned use and the room conditions.

Installation: Laying a herringbone pattern requires expertise and precision. If you do not have the necessary skills, you should leave the work to an experienced floor layer to ensure that the pattern is laid correctly.

In summary, herringbone can be installed on many subfloors as long as the above factors are taken into account. Proper preparation of the subfloor and selection of the appropriate material are critical to a successful outcome. If you are unsure or have questions about suitability for your particular space, it is best to consult a professional or flooring expert who can recommend the best options.

  • What makes PURLINE herringbone different from other floor coverings?

PURLINE herringbone floors have a number of special features that distinguish them from other herringbone floors. These include:

Sustainable material: PURLINE herringbone floors are made from an innovative, sustainable material consisting mainly of natural and renewable raw materials. This material is free from plasticisers and harmful chemicals, resulting in an environmentally friendly and healthy flooring option.

High durability: Thanks to the high-quality materials and workmanship, PURLINE flooring is extremely durable and resistant to wear, scratches and stains. This makes it ideal for high traffic areas in both residential and commercial spaces.

Water resistance: Unlike some other herringbone floors, PURLINE floors are water resistant. They can therefore be used in damp areas such as bathrooms and kitchens without any problems, and without deforming or damaging the material.

Easy maintenance: PURLINE herringbone floors are easy to maintain. They are easy to clean and do not require any special care, such as after-treatment with oils or sealants. You can find detailed information on cleaning PURLINE organic flooring here.

Versatile design: PURLINE herringbone floors are available in a wide range of colours and designs, making them easy to integrate into different furnishing styles and room concepts. The combination of different designs allows for creative room design.

Easy installation: The installation of PURLINE herringbone floors is comparatively easy and can be done on a floating or a self-adhesive mat, and the more traditional installation using wet adhesive. This makes them a practical option for DIY enthusiasts and professional floor layers.

In summary, PURLINE herringbone floors offer a sustainable, hard-wearing and water-resistant solution that features easy maintenance and versatile design. This makes them an attractive choice for spaces where both aesthetics and functionality are required.

  • Can PURLINE herringbone also be installed on a self-adhesive mat?

Yes, it is possible to install herringbone flooring on a self-adhesive mat, but there are some important considerations you should keep in mind:

Choice of material: The self-adhesive mat should be suitable for the flooring you intend to use, whether that's a vinyl or an organic floor.

Preparation of the subfloor: The subfloor to which the self-adhesive mat will be applied must be level, clean and dry. Any unevenness or dirt can cause the adhesive mat not to adhere properly, which in turn can cause the herringbone pattern to become irregular.

Precise alignment: Installing a herringbone pattern requires precision, especially when it comes to aligning the planks or tiles. Measure carefully and use guide lines to ensure that the planks are placed at the desired angle.

Apply the adhesive mat correctly: Follow the self-adhesive mat manufacturer's instructions to ensure that it is applied evenly to the subfloor. Wrinkles, gaps or air pockets in the adhesive mat can affect the appearance of the herringbone pattern.

Install planks: Once the adhesive mat has been rolled out, you can lay the planks in your herringbone pattern. The braid should run at a 90° angle to the self-adhesive mat strips. Lay the planks butt-to-butt without tension and rub them firmly onto the adhesive mat to ensure good adhesion. Please refer to our installation instructions for herringbone installation for details.

Finishing work: Make sure you finish the edges of the room carefully for a clean and professional outcome. Finally, the room must be rolled with a 45 kg sectional roller.

It is important to note that the quality of the adhesive mat and the care you take during installation are crucial to the final result. If you feel unsure or have little experience with flooring work, it may be advisable to call in a professional floor layer to ensure that the herringbone pattern is laid correctly and evenly.
