What is an end profile?

An end profile is a rail used to cover the expansion joint between the floor covering and the wall. When installing flooring, an expansion joint must be installed because the materials can expand with changes in temperature. This small gap between the wall and the flooring, detracts from the beauty of the floor, but is necessary to protect the flooring. End profiles are installed to ensure protection and a harmonious finish between the wall and the flooring.

End profiles to protect the floor covering

Normally, transition profiles or matching profiles are used to protect the floor covering. However, if there is a barrier-free exit or floor-to-ceiling windows, end profiles must be used. End profiles are also used to close the necessary edge distance to walls. In most cases, end profiles consist of two parts that are screwed together. This guarantees a firm and secure hold even under heavy loads.

However, the use of end profiles is not only for technical reasons. The end profiles can also be used as a design element. The various colour options in silver, brass or stainless steel allow the profile to stand out visually from the flooring. A uniform, harmonious overall appearance can thus be created and at the same time makes the rooms appear larger.

In addition, edges are not only protected from damage and dirt, but also  tripping hazards prevented.

Frequently asked questions FAQ on end profiles

End profiles: Anyone who deals with the installation of floor coverings will sooner or later come into contact with profiles. This refers to the floor profiles that are mounted to finish off a wall, floor-to-ceiling windows or the like, thus creating a harmonious overall appearance. But here, too, there are some questions to be answered: For which areas of application are end profiles? How do I cut end profiles? And what types of installation are there for end profiles?

We provide the answers.

What end profiles are available?

wineo end profiles are made of the basic material aluminium. These are available for screwing or self-adhesive in the colour variants silver, brass and stainless steel.
For special requirements, such as stair nosings, stair nosing profiles or angle profiles are also available.

Where are end profiles used?

End profiles are used wherever an edge margin is necessary. For example, the distance to the wall, for floor-to-ceiling windows or to patio doors.
One advantage of aluminium flooring profiles is that they can also be used in bathrooms and are therefore suitable for use in damp rooms.

What are the advantages of an end profile?

In addition to the other flooring profiles, end profiles are a necessary component to protect the flooring in the long term and to avoid tripping hazards.
In addition, end profiles ensure a harmonious overall appearance with a successful finish to the wall.

When do I need an end profile?

When laying a floor covering, expansion joints often have to be planned and laid. Among other things, a necessary wall distance is also maintained, which can be concealed by end profiles.

Floor profiles are also used for doors, balcony exits or floor-to-ceiling windows. In this way, the expansion joint is connected to the adjacent area.

How to cut end profiles?

A metal saw must be used for all types of aluminium floor profiles. Smaller hand saws or chop saws are particularly suitable here. Jigsaws are not recommended for cutting aluminium end profiles.

Make sure that the end profile rests with the longer side on a firm surface so that it does not bend or break during cutting.

What types of installation are there for end profiles?

Aluminium end profiles are available in two different installation types: screwed or glued.

Screw mounting: always 2-part, consisting of a rail and the profile.

Adhesive mounting: one-piece - pull off the adhesive strip, stick it on, finished.

What is the difference between end profiles and transition profiles?

Transition profiles or transition rails are installed between two floors of the same height and connect different floor coverings, such as laminate and PURLINE organic flooring or vinyl flooring and laminate. Rooms can thus be clearly separated from each other with the help of transition profiles.

With floor-to-ceiling windows or balcony exits, it is often not possible to install skirting boards. In this case, end profiles are needed to connect the flooring to the window or door without a visible expansion joint.
