What is a transition profile?
Transition profiles are used in flooring work where transitions and gaps such as expansion joints are to be bridged. Transition rails are installed between two floor coverings of the same height.
Transition rails connect different floor coverings such as parquet and laminate flooring or vinyl flooring and PURLINE organic flooring. Transition profiles are also used for uniform floor coverings, however, if an expansion joint is necessary due to the size of the room. This is also a convenient and easy way to separate rooms from each other.
Which transitions profiles are available?
Transition profiles for laminate, vinyl flooring & PURLINE organic flooring
However, the use of transition rails is not only for technical reasons. The transition profiles can also be used as a design element. Thanks to the different colour variants in silver, brass or stainless steel, there is a suitable design for every room. This creates a uniform, harmonious overall appearance and at the same time makes the rooms look larger.
With a transition profile, accents can also be set by making the transition profile stand out visually from the flooring. This applies in particular to the combination of different floor coverings. For example, in the transition from tiles to vinyl flooring or parquet to laminate flooring. A transition profile for vinyl, laminate or parquet floors thus supports the demarcation of different living areas. The profile thus visually shows: This is where the hallway ends and the living room begins.
In addition, edges are not only protected from damage, but also prevent tripping hazards.
Frequently asked questions FAQ on transition profiles
Transition profiles or transition rails: Anyone who deals with the installation of floor coverings will come into contact with these terms sooner or later. What is meant are the aluminium profiles that are installed as a transition between two floor coverings, thus creating a harmonious overall appearance. But here, too, there are some questions to be answered: For which areas of application are transition profiles used? How do I cut transition profiles?
We provide the answers.
What transition profiles are available?
wineo transition profiles are made of the basic material aluminium. These are available for screwing or self-adhesive in the colour variants silver, brass and stainless steel.
Where are transition profiles used?
Transition profiles are used wherever two floor coverings of the same height meet to cover an expansion joint (e.g. between doors). One advantage of aluminium transition rails is that they can also be used in bathrooms and are therefore suitable for use in damp rooms.
Which transition profile is the right one?
There are rooms that are exposed to less stress than others. The kitchen or bathroom, for example, is subject to heavy use. The rule of thumb is: the more the flooring is used, the more robust a transition profile should be.
For heavily used areas, transition profiles that are firmly and securely screwed to the subfloor are particularly suitable. In rooms with less traffic, a self-adhesive transition profile is often sufficient.
When are transition profiles needed?
When installing a floor or two floor coverings of the same height, certain distances must be maintained with an expansion joint. These joints must then be covered afterwards.
Transition rails are used to neatly close the open areas and additionally protect the floor covering.
How do you cut transition profiles?
It is essential to use a metal saw for a transition profile made of aluminium. Smaller hand saws or chop saws are particularly suitable here. Jigsaws are not recommended for cutting.
Make sure that the longer side of the transition rail rests on a solid surface so that it does not bend or break during cutting.
What types of fastening are there for transition profiles?
Aluminium transition profiles are available in two types: for screwing or for gluing.
For screwing: always 2-part consisting of a rail and the profile.
For gluing: one-piece - pull off the adhesive strip, stick it on, done.
How are transition profiles for screwing attached?
When installing transition profiles for screwing, the first step is to determine the width. This is, for example, the width of the door frame. This measurement is marked on the profile. Next, the profile is shortened to the correct length with a hacksaw. After the basic profile has been shortened, it is placed on the floor without tension with an expansion gap of approx. 5 mm. Now pre-drill the holes for the dowels using a 5 mm drill bit. Before the dowels are inserted into the subfloor and the base profile is screwed in place, the drill holes must be vacuumed out. When the flooring work is finished, start with the final installation of the matching profile. The shortened profile is placed above the base profile. Make sure that this bar is inserted from the adjustment profile into the guide rail of the base profile.
